How Long Does a Dryer Vent Cleaning Actually Take?
If you've been putting off a dryer vent cleaning because you think it'll eat up your whole Saturday — good news. It won't even eat up an episode of your favorite show. For most homes, the entire visit takes between 45 minutes and an hour and a half, start to finish.
But of course, "it depends" is the honest answer. Some homes are quick in-and-out jobs. Others take a little longer because of where the vent runs, how long it is, or how much lint has piled up in there over the years. Let's walk through what actually happens during a typical visit — and what can stretch the clock.
The Short Answer: 45 to 90 Minutes
Most jobs are done before your coffee gets cold.
What Happens Minute-by-Minute
Here's a realistic timeline for a standard single-story home with a vent in decent shape:
Minutes 0 – 5: Hello & Walkthrough
We show up, introduce ourselves, and have you point us to the laundry room. We'll ask a couple quick questions: any recent issues, how long since the last cleaning, anything we should know.
Minutes 5 – 10: Setup & Inspection
We carefully pull the dryer away from the wall, disconnect the vent hose, and lay down drop cloths to protect your floor. Then we do a quick inspection of the duct, the connection, and the exterior vent cap.
Minutes 10 – 35: The Actual Cleaning
This is where the magic happens. Using a rotating brush system on a long flexible rod, we work through the entire vent line from inside to out. A high-powered vacuum captures the lint as it's loosened. No mess, no dust cloud in your laundry room.
Minutes 35 – 45: Exterior Vent & Reconnection
We clean the outside vent cap (where the air exits your home), make sure the flapper opens freely, and reconnect everything to your dryer. Then we slide the dryer back into place.
Minutes 45 – 55: Test Run & Final Walkthrough
We run your dryer for a few minutes, check that air is flowing strong out the exterior vent, and show you everything we pulled out. You'll see the difference immediately — and probably be a little shocked at how much lint was hiding in there.
Average Visit: For a typical home, plan for about an hour, door-to-door. You don't have to hover or supervise — most folks get coffee, work from home, or hang out with the kids while we work.
What Can Make It Take Longer?
Not all homes are created equal. Here are the things that can stretch the visit past that one-hour mark:
Long or Winding Vent Runs (+15 – 30 min)
If your dryer is in the middle of the house instead of on an exterior wall, the duct has farther to travel — sometimes through ceilings, attics, or multiple bends. More duct, more cleaning time.
Years (or Decades) of Buildup (+20 – 40 min)
If it's been five or ten years since the last cleaning — or if it's never been cleaned at all — there can be serious clogs that take extra muscle and multiple passes to clear out.
Rooftop or Second-Story Vents (+10 – 20 min)
If your vent exits through the roof instead of a side wall, we need to safely access it from above. Adds a little time, but no extra hassle on your end.
Crushed or Damaged Ducting (+15 – 30 min)
Sometimes we find a section of duct that's kinked, crushed, or disconnected. We'll show you, explain the options, and if you'd like, we can repair or replace it on the spot.
Animal Nests or Foreign Objects (+20 – 40 min)
More common than you'd think — birds, squirrels, and even mice love to nest in dryer vents. Removing nests carefully (and replacing the exterior cap if needed) takes extra time.
"The cleaning itself is quick. The peace of mind lasts all year."
Do You Need to Be Home the Whole Time?
Yes and no. You'll want to be home when we arrive (so we can access the laundry room) and when we leave (so we can walk you through what we found). But in between? Live your life. We've cleaned vents while customers were on Zoom calls, baking, helping kids with homework, even napping. We work cleanly and quietly.
How Often Do You Actually Need This?
For most households, once a year is the sweet spot. Large families or homes with long vent runs benefit from every six months. If you have pets that shed a lot, you may want to bump it up too — pet hair makes its way into your laundry and out through the vent in surprising amounts.
Common Myth: "I cleaned the lint trap, so I'm good."
The truth: Your lint trap only catches about a quarter of the lint your dryer produces. The other 75% travels right past it and into the duct, where it stays — building up year after year until something is done about it.
The Bottom Line
If you've been putting this off because you think it's going to be a big production — it's really not. An hour, give or take. You'll get a safer home, a more efficient dryer, lower energy bills, and clothes that actually finish drying in one cycle. That's a pretty good return on 60 minutes.
Most of our customers tell us afterward that they wish they'd done it years ago. Don't be the homeowner saying that next year. Get on the calendar now and check it off the list.
